The ins and outs of coffee, caffeine and health:
- Not a diuretic
- No increased risk of heart disease
- No risk in the development of hypertension
- No risk in cancer (in fact, may half the risk of liver cancer)
- Small effect on bone loss
- Doesn’t help with weight loss
- Enhances mood and physical performance
- Improves alertness and reaction time
- Reduces the risk of Parkinson’s disease
- Lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes
Looks like the NYT missed my recent review on coffee consumption and liver cancer. Additionally, while the Swedish study mentioned in the NYT article found no connection between coffee, tea or caffeine consumption and breast cancer, a study published in May 2007 suggests that caffeine may protect against breast cancer in women that have a BRCA1 gene mutation.

Someday, all the exercise many may do will simply involve taking a pill.
Researchers at the Salk Institute in San Diego reported that they had found two drugs that did wonders for the athletic endurance of couch potato mice. One drug, known as Aicar, increased the mice’s endurance on a treadmill by 44 percent after just four weeks of treatment.
A second drug, GW1516, supercharged the mice to a 75 percent increase in endurance but had to be combined with exercise to have any effect.
The drugs work by activating the muscle-remodeling system in mice and converting type 1 muscle fibers to type 2 fibers.
They’ve already made them available to the World Anti-Doping Agency for the development of a test to detect whether an athlete has used the drugs.
The drugs are described in the current issue of Cell.
